Job Description

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB

Support the Head of Communications in developing and managing a strategic approach to internal and external communications and media relations activity.

Ensure that the Chief Executive and management team is fully briefed on all potentially contentious media and PR activity and provide assistance in ensuring that Council's reputation is protected.

Plan and implement strategic media relations programmes and campaigns to promote Council's services, projects, initiatives and strategies, ensuring a positive profile for Council and for Mid and East Antrim.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES



1.1. Deliver all functions of a busy press office, acting as the first port of call for all incoming and outgoing media relations activity, upholding and protecting the image and reputation of Council at all times.







1.2 Work closely with Senior Council Officers on all day-to-day proactive media relations work, including writing press releases, identifying positive news stories and organising press launches, press briefings and photocalls concerning Council's business in relation to projects, Corporate programmes, or issues that arise.

1.3 Competently handle reactive media, dealing with press queries and comments received in relation to Council activities and ensure they are brought to the attention of the relevant departments for timely response in a target-driven environment.

1.4 Stay abreast of Council's major projects and the work of Council's Standing Committees with a view to identifying potential items of media interest.

1.5 Co-ordinate all media invitations on behalf of Council and facilitate media familiarisation trips or similar opportunities as they arise.

1.6 Provide media advice and support to Senior Management and Elected Members particularly the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, including preparing media briefings, advising on reputational risk and delivering training to staff as required.

1.7 Develop and implement a range of relevant and engaging communications and media relations plans in support of Council services, projects, initiatives and wider strategies.

1.8 Support communications activity to keep Elected Members, management and staff informed of developments in respect of Council's media and public relations, crisis management, current affairs and issues.

1.9 Establish effective stakeholder networks and partnerships to facilitate collaborative communications and media opportunities and the generation of efficiency savings.

1.10 Build new relationships and maintain existing links with press and broadcast media, leading journalists and opinion-formers, and maintain Council's contacts database.

1.11 Identify specialist online and offline media and seek proactive media opportunities in conjunction with Council departments and Council's strategic partners where appropriate.

1.12 Engage with international media outlets with a view to promoting Mid and East Antrim as an attractive destination for tourism and investment.

1.13 Benchmark and evaluate media relations activities with a view to continuous improvement, providing regular reporting on media impact.

1.14 Identify and support the use of media engagement and monitoring methods, including the use of new technologies.

1.15 Ensure integration of Council's online and offline media content; develop and maintain Council's social media profiles in support of Council services, projects, initiatives and wider strategies, being responsible for creating engaging content.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants must have a minimum of a degree qualification in journalism, communications, public relations or a related discipline.

AND

Be able to demonstrate by providing personal and specific examples that they have at least two years' experience in the field of Journalism, Communications or Public Relations.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate two years' experience in the following areas:-

  • Proven experience of working in a high volume environment in journalism, communications or public relations for an organisation or media group.
  • A track record of developing and delivering successful targeted communications and PR campaigns designed to engage a wide range of target audiences, delivering and evaluating results against clear objectives.
  • Proven experience of effective use of social media and online media management to deliver positive outcomes for an organisation

Alternatively consideration may be given to candidates who do not possess the required educational qualification but who can demonstrate four years' experience in the field of Journalism, Communications or Public Relations.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate four years' experience in the following areas:-

  • Proven experience of working in a high volume environment in journalism, communications or public relations for an organisation or media group.
  • A track record of developing and delivering successful targeted communications and PR campaigns designed to engage a wide range of target audiences, delivering and evaluating results against clear objectives.
