Job description


  1. To work closely with all community groups, to promote sustainability
  2. To develop and implement a community business approach to group activities
  3. To strengthen the community/voluntary sector in the Borough using the social economy as a tool for development.
  4. Ensure that the department complies with all statutory and legislative requirements by adhering to these requirements and working in accordance with good governance and health and safety requirements.
  5. Ensure that all responsibilities are carried out in a timely and effective manner and that general confidentiality is maintained in all areas relating to the work of the Council.

Audit prospective groups for their suitability to become community businesses, to include identifying strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats for these groups and providing resources to deal with these issues

Liaise with training providers to set up a database of tutors, training methods, materials, accreditations and other resources relevant to the social economy

Identify and signpost groups to appropriate specialist training

Directly mentor groups in the Borough to promote social economic development opportunities

Build confidence and capacity and promote the acquisition of skills and competence and share good practice

Create and maintain networking opportunities, and organise information and networking events

Develop appropriate, collaborative mechanisms between statutory agencies, community development initiatives and the private sector

Assist in the establishment of five new community businesses in the Borough

Manage all aspects of finance, monitoring and evaluation of the project within the budgets agreed

Person Specification

Education / Qualifications and Experience

Applicants must, at the closing date for receipt of applications, possess:

  • At least one year's demonstrable experience of project management in a funding environment
  • Working experience of managing EU funded or other programmes
  • Experience of delivering training, producing educational or information literature to a wide audience
  • Experience of small-scale event delivery Experience of policy development and/or lobbying
  • Possession of a current driving licence and access to a car or form of
  • A HND/Degree or equivalent qualification and at least two years


  • Four years experience in a professional capacity dealing with individuals and/or groups in business development or community business development
  • Knowledge High level of presentation skills to a variety of audiences
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of Microsoft Office packages to Include, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Excel
