Job description

Grafton Recruitment are working in partnership with a large public sector organisation to recruit a temporary Events & PR Officer to start ASAP for a duration of 4 Months (initially).

Pay rate: 0-12 week's £8.21 per hour

13+ week's £12.04 per hour

Location: Belfast, BT1

Hours: Mon - Fri (9.00am - 5.00pm)

Essential Criteria

  • Possess a qualification at HNC/HND level, or higher, in a relevant discipline
  • Substantial experience in media relations in/for a large complex organisation. This experience must be at a strategic level.
  • A minimum of 5 years experience of implementing significant media relations, political relationship programmes and public affairs campaigns to support corporate objectives
  • Experience of working and influencing at a senior management level and advising senior management on specific media issues in a large complex organisation
  • Significant experience of managing a press office, writing speeches and corporate copy
  • Proven experience in implementing crisis communication strategies and providing advice in relation to the management of the corporate reputation of the College
  • Experience in a management role involving planning, management and evaluation of strategic projects relevant to media and/or corporate relations
  • Evidence of effective media handling and developing strategic networks with the media and/or politicians
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to proactively create and maintain effective working relationships with a varied range of key influencers and stakeholders


  • Human Resource Management
    • To provide dynamic leadership that contributes to the creation of a culture that encourages debate, rewards innovation and fosters inclusiveness and productive team working within the Centre for Corporate Communications and Marketing
    • To ensure that all staff within the relevant area of accountability are working efficiently and effectively and to take action if standards are not met
    • To ensure the implementation of effective and equitable procedures within the framework set by the College for the recruitment, selection, appointment, grading, appraisal, discipline and performance management of all staff within the Media and Public Affairs function

  • Media Relations
  • To implement a media relations strategy and programme to support the College's corporate objectives and positively promote the College
  • To support the Head of Corporate Communications and Marketing in providing the College's Executive and Senior Management teams with expert high level advice on media and political relationship issues
  • To build sustainable and appropriate internal and external networks to support the media relations programme fostering relationships with national and international and local media as well as with other communications professionals to build the College profile and enhance the College's image and reputation
  • To identify and proactively manage areas of reputational risk
  • To manage the College Press Office and day to day operations of the media relations work at Belfast Met including:
    • Managing media coverage arrangements for key events, announcements, press conferences, radio and TV interviews
    • Deliver the proactive and reactive elements of the media relations programme including responding to media enquiries and briefing journalists
    • Manage relationships with the press office and all relevant NI Executive Departments
    • Work with the College Marketing staff in sourcing, editing and writing corporate content and news features for the College website and key corporate publications
