Job Description

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB

Undertake chemical and biological sampling of water and effluent discharges as part of planned programmes/surveys and in response to pollution incidents, including the transportation of samples to designated laboratories, ensuring compliance with departmental protocols and quality assurance standards at all times.

Conduct low flow inspections, along with inspections of discharges and monitor identified sites in support of other team members as part of pollution prevention campaigns.

Prepare witness statements and give evidence in support of enforcement activity.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Service Delivery

  1. 1.1 Take routine samples of water and of effluent discharges in connection with:-
  • Rivers, lakes and coastal waters
  • Water Service Waste Water Treatment Works
  • Private sewage treatment works
  • Septic tanks
  • Industrial discharges
  • Landfill sites
  • NI Water Treatment Works
  • Other point sources
  • Microbiological sampling of Bathing Waters

1.2 Undertake freshwater and effluent sampling in response to pollution incidents;

1.3 Undertake biological and chemical sampling/surveys of rivers;

1.4 Undertake duties associated with consented discharges such as low flow inspections and visual inspections of discharges;

1.5 Provide support and assist other Water Quality field staff and NIEA Water Management Unit staff as required;

1.6 Conduct monitoring visits to previous non-compliant sites to check for indications of ongoing water quality issues;

1.7 Prepare witness statements for pollution prosecutions and give evidence in court if required.

1.8 Adhere to Northern Ireland Environment Agency protocols for sampling compliance and quality assurance.

Essential Criteria

Applicants must have:

A minimum of 5 GCSE passes at grades A - C or equivalent to include English Language and either Chemistry/Biology

AND

Be able to demonstrate by providing personal and specific examples, that they have one years' experience to include:

  • Producing clear, accurate records and paperwork
  • Ensuring customer needs and expectations are met;
  • Working as part of a team under verbal and written instruction to deliver within set timescale

OR

If you do not possess the necessary educational qualification outlined above, be able to demonstrate by providing personal and specific examples, that they have three years' experience, to include:

  • Producing clear, accurate records and paperwork
  • Ensuring customer needs and expectations are met;
