Job Description

Our Client, A large Public Sector Organisation requires temporary Networks Sewage Technicians

Role: Network Sewage Technician

Duration: Until March 2017

Location: Belfast

Pay rate: £12.05

Hours: 37.5 per week


  • Form an integral element of the new Wastewater/Networks Sewerage Operations Team;
  • Assess and resolve, where practical, problems on the Sewerage Network
  • Apply detailed understanding of the sewer network to solve problems, operational issues and make decisions through the use of standards, procedures, established regulations and precedent;
  • Assist the Field Manager in managing the C309 contract with particular focus on the standard of service being delivered to the customer;
  • Undertake proactive investigations of sewer blockages, flooding incidents and pollution incidents to assist in the development of remedial action including when appropriate, assisting with desilting and Jetvac operations, sewer repairs, undertaking CCTV work and streetworks/ironwork activities;
  • Maintain appropriate documentation and records e.g. CCTV surveys including DVD copies, Plant Log Sheets, desilting/tankering record sheets, waste management documentation;
  • Assist in the investigation of customer queries and complaints and identification of possible solutions;
  • Assist the Field Manager in dealing with the customers to resolve complaints and/or compensation issues;
  • Take ownership and ensure prompt resolution, were appropriate of customer issues with regards to operational issues; Participate as part of a team of field staff to undertake investigatory work intocauses of defects in the network with an objective to achieve improvement in the overall effectiveness/efficiency of the sewer network;
  • Liaise with Network Sewerage contractors to ensure that all remedial/reactive work is carried out in an efficient and effective manner meeting the required standard of work;
  • Record keeping including quality checks to assist the Field Manager in the validation and approval of orders, reports, invoices etc. for work completed by contractors;
  • Ensure accuracy of information given to the Assets, Customer/Operation Networks teams is maintained. This will include responsibility, when required, for updates on the accuracy of sewer records and plans to the GIS team
  • Policy Implementation and appropriate participation- Operation of Mobile Work Management and Lone worker/confined spaces systems;
  • Ensure compliance with Health & Safety Requirements by contractors.
  • Effectively contribute to providing a 24/7 service including participation in out of hours incidents and Major Incidents and undertaking role identified in MIP documentation;
  • Ensure a high level of customer service and compliance is delivered;
  • Perform to clear and agreed team and personal goals
  • Provide feedback to appropriate levels of Management on the performance of the wastewater assets and contracting resources in their area;

Asset Activities

  • Assist Field Manager in the identification of investment needs, particularly in relation to the sewer network;
  • Provision of accurate updates, to the GIS team

Contractor Activities

  • Ensure that Contractors in areas of responsibility operate within Contractor Guidelines;
  • Assisting the Field Manager in managing the Contractors through undertaking spot checks on their delivery of quality requirements , risk management and health and safety performance;
  • Assist the Field Manager in the effective management of the company's procurement process to ensure accurate and timely validating and approving of all orders, reports, invoices etc. for work completed by contractors;
  • Establishing effective channels of communications with Contractors including timely updates of information received from contractors;
  • Provision of regular reports to line management outlining the performance of the contractors operating in areas of responsibility, highlighting any areas of concern and possible action plans to address the issues


  • At least 3 years' experience in a wastewater/network sewerage environment.
  • Experience in dealing directly with customers, demonstrating good oral and written communications skills; good IT skills and a good working knowledge and understanding of the GIS
  • Experience in dealing with contractors and an understanding of contract documentation;
  • Good understanding in the use of CCTV systems and Jetvac equipment and be prepared to be trained in the use of both where required;
  • Good understanding of Health & Safety legislation particularly in regards to Streetworks and be medically fit to undergo any training in relation to confined space work.
  • A full, current driving licence;
  • Be required to participate in out of hours standby and callout duties as required;
